M WEIN RAKU POTTERY

RAKU POTTERY

Brought to Japan in the Edo Period for use by the monks in tea ceremonies as a perfect union of the earth ,fire and water. tha tea cups were roughly hand made and rapidly fired then dowsed with water . the galze was usually black or white but if the clay had traces of copper it would change to matallic or gold traces. today the colours are many and every artist has his Sacred formula .Raku is Highly prized in Jpan as no two pots are ever the same. it usally takes 3 to 4 pots to get one good one,as they crack or explode when dowsed with water at Thousand oC and each one that survives is special.
